Leung Chi-Wo | Asia Art Archive
Artist Leung Chi-Wo
Biography/Born in Hong Kong in 1968, Leung graduated with a MFA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1997 after a photography study in l'Istituto per lo Sviluppo Socio-Economico dello Spilimberghese in Italy and an internship in the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst in Ghent, Belgium. He has exhibited in Hong Kong, New York, Melbourne, Tokyo, Oslo, Vienna, Hamburg and Toronto, etc. Awards received include the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship (1997), Urban Council Award of the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial (1996) and the First Prize in Sculpture from the Philippe Charriol Foundation (1995). In 2000, he held a solo exhibition in the Queens Museum of Art, New York. In 2001, his site-specific project was exhibited in the Hong Kong Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
Pesented by the Asia Art Archive, this time he presents a site-specific audio-visual installation for the city wide project, October Contemporary 2009.
(Inter)Viewing Possession is the "most difficult project to explain" as he said in his personal web page .
This is an art project that considers the invisible links between the Archive and its community through the practice of collecting.
Designers, shop owners, teenagers, homeowners, and residents from the surrounding Sheung Wan neigbhourhood have taken part in the project by sharing the stories behind their personal possessions through interviews. Inside eight view-finders installed at archive, the audience is confronted with re-written, fragmented texts based on personal stories and observations culled from the interviews, delivered via intertwined monologues by Leung Chi-Wo and his partner, Sara Wong.
The work consciously attempts to transgress the boundaries between viewing and voyeurism, real and fictional, art and the everyday.

" ...a candle is like art because it illuminates. If I approach it, it illuminates me. If I look at it, it illuminates me. If I touch the flame, it burns me. If I look at it from close to, it only burns for me, like a secret. If I look at it with a friend it illuminates us both, like a mystery that we share. A candle is like art because it melts. It melts and loses itself as if in a dream, without any reason, like all the good things we would prefer to last.... "

............................
Born in Barcelona 7th april 1957 He's working in Lausanne (Switzerland) since 1986 Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne, engraving and drawing (1993) Université de Lausanne, degree in History of Art (1994) , today He created, with the help of Barcelona´s people, a sea made of candles, that neither the rain, nor the wind could make them stop. A lightened sea, emerging from the stones of one of the most important places of Barcelona as we walked by, damped us, and today, just for today, art started to commit its means: uniting creative minds around the world, waking up our expectations, desires, and mind.
Thank you, Barcelona, your sea, lightened our minds today.
About the Project:
A SOCIAL SCULPTURE
Those of us who live in an urban space on a daily basis often have to put up with it more than we enjoy it. There are plenty of reasons for this: work, stress, audio-visual saturation, haste .. The Encenguem la mar ! action wishes to give us the chance to marvel at what is right under our noses: a city-space full of possibilities. This is not, however, an exercise in passive contemplation, but something constructive, which aims at achieving a new, original point of view.
Encenguem la mar! action wishes to create a magical meeting point in which all the potential of the future will appear. One of the vital motors of any society is its culture. To light up this motor in a way which is collective, generous, unusual and civic is, as I see it, a fine reaction to the time of great changes which we are living through.
