Global Reviews: Nueva América / Quiero Club

" Mexican bands are very cool. I don’t know why but at the moment Mexican kids look like the coolest in the world. Sure, a lot of the look is an appropriation of Nu-Rave but it damn well works. I can find very little out about Quiero Club outside of the fact that they are from Mexico. Maybe that’s enough. They don’t look especially cool – 2 thin ladies and blokes that wouldn’t look out of place in The Magic Numbers. But as soon as you press play you’re transported to the night-club at the end of the universe."
[sic]magazine
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

A Monterrey, Mexico-based indie dance-pop quintet, Quiero Club are proof that hipsterism has gone global. Their funky programmed beats and '80s retro melodies (played on guitar and vintage synths), whether sung in English or Spanish (or both), would fit right into any club in Brooklyn.There are some unexpected touches, like the choir sound (generated with a keyboard) on "Fin de Semana Sin Fin" or the brief appearance of a New Order-style upper-register bassline on "La Muerte de Ziggy," but for the most part this is a cool, fun-oriented electronic pastiche with no ambitions beyond partying(...)it proves that Quiero Club are more than just five art students joking around for their -- and our -- entertainment. "

allmusic.com

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

" The album is to date, a refreshing experience that even though is uneven, for the moment aims for the ageless pop made in Latin America, their new album points to that direction as well. Five backgrounds collide in a powerful sophomore album where they seem to survey the sounds of Latinoamerica, attempt to redefine their globalized approach from their previous work and superglue them together to outline a new continent, Nueva America. Fluently cycling between Spanish and English, all pieces are subversive in their own way, this time they are re-entering a solidified MySpace culture that has already met Girl Talk, CSS or even the Vivian Girls, these guys have made a brilliant move by globalizing our region."

clubfonograma.com

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

"Nacional Records is proud to announce the November 3rd release of Quiero Club's new album
'Nueva America.' Quiero Club combines the dance floor sounds of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and CSS with the adventurousness of their fellow Monterrey natives Plastilina Mosh. This upcoming release is already one of Mexico's most-acclaimed indie rock releases of the past year."
corrientelatina.com
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Bass and no attitude | Poirier in Guanajuato, México

“His collaborations and remixes tend to be uniformly fierce and furious; he knows how to prop up whoever has the microphone.”

CHICAGO READER

Ghislain Poirier, made a statement between the years 2005 and 2007 by creating the IT Montreal parties _Bounce Le Gros_. The digital Multi-instrumentalist , producer and DJ, it´s a referent to the club addicts, to nova soca and retro-electronic tunes.Last night, the Alhóndiga of Granaditas, the main stage of spectacles in the Festival Internacional Cervantino, was full. More than 7,000 people danced , clapped, and welcome the Quebec crew, that performed mostly jamaican tunes ....live! and perfectly show their statement music, to a complete different audience from what they are used to.Photobucket

Even though mexicans are not very used to nova-soca and bass, the over-the-top-electro fans couldn´t help to bounce. Some where a little bit impacient ( Modeselektor was coming next) , but at the end.. they kicked it. The Crew´s incredible vibe, and musical creativity took it to the top... everyone talked about them after the show. Everyone was surprise with the cumbia rythms that the Canadian mastered.

Poirier has become renowned globally for his bass slammin´ remixes that continue to further solidify his title as “king of the bounce”.He has remixed tracks for UK grime/hip hop sensation Lady Sovereign (Def Jam), Bassnectar, Pole, Buck 65, The Editors, Champion, all to much critical acclaim and garnering him attention from publications such as pitchforkmedia.com , The Wire and XLR8R Magazine
.

At the end of the concert everyone agreed, Modeselektor didn´t gave its best performances yesterday, but the spectators will follow Poirier musical career for sure
. The get-back-to-jamaican- tunes , and other latin perfectly remixed sounds cautivated our ears. It´s a matter of
sabrozura.

53° Ed.

“¿De qué otra cosa podríamos hablar?”
Teresa Margolles: “What Else Could We Talk About?”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

[ " Some female artists are also in high demand—like Mexico’s Teresa Margolles, who focuses on her country’s violence via drug dealers and dead women of Juarez, will emerge as big names. " ]
International Herald Tribune, British Vogue, Elle Decor, Glamour, the Times Magazine (U.K.)

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

According to the press, 2008 was the year when more bullets have been fired in Mexico’s recent history. That same year, more than 5.000 people were killed due to violent clashes and executions among criminal gangs, and in operations of the security forces, whereas approximately 2.800 died in similar circumstances in 2007. Beyond the fact that the statistics of casualties have climbed to war zone levels, the carnage provokes a long lasting trauma for families and communities. Due to the recent upsurge of violence, Teresa Margolles (Culiacán, México, 1963), that for almost two decades has concentrated in the exploration of the artistic possibilities of human remains, the memory of the loss provoked by violent death and the institutions that manage human corpses, has acquired an even greater poignancy. Her radical approach to the “life of the corpse” as part of the SEMEFO collective in the 1990s, that led her to develop a number of evanescent and abstracted methods to infuse with body substances the post minimalist aesthetics of global contemporary art, has recently undergone a new turn to work from the material traces of killings in the streets and the associated verbal production taken from execution notes, police reports and press accounts of violence. This is an artist who has left the morgue where she originally located her studio, to absorb the pervasive extension of death into the social body and propose an unsettling interaction of contemporary aesthetics and debased materiality. Margolles’s exploration of the contemporary necropolis involves the transmogrification of the strategies of urban research of the modern flaneur. The artists and her collaborators explore the urban territory, in search of minute material traces and residues of the assassinations.

Through different methods (the soaking of pieces of cloth with mud or blood in the scene of an execution, the collection of the minute fragments of windshield glass after a shooting, or the visual and aural recording of a landscape symbolically and emotionally charged by the memory of death) Margolles harvests the formless leftover of thousands of lives, mapping a territory affected by the accumulation of corpses.At Venice, she has performed an overall intervention based on discrete, and sometimes almost immaterial, continuous actions taking place in a historically overcharged location. The substances of anger, loss and social waste, are transferred (or better said, smuggled) into a Sixteenth Century Venetian Palace, cannibalizing the traces of decay and history of the building. More than a presentation of objects or images, Margolles exposes her audience to the ghostly and abject sacrality of fluids and traces: jewels made with fragments of windshield glass, murderous aphorisms embroidered in gold on bold, sound recordings of the landscape of death, compose a space of reflection, bodily intimation and anxiety. In a time where borders are no more able to contain the plague, when politics are mobilized by the ideological uses of fear, and where global capital is accompanied by a whole epidemic of violence, What else could we talk about? would want to suggest the need to politicize discontent and disgust, rather than falling prey of the strategies of a new world order erected over the ruins of the perpetual wars and infinite crusades of the powers to be.

" ...a candle is like art because it illuminates. If I approach it, it illuminates me. If I look at it, it illuminates me. If I touch the flame, it burns me. If I look at it from close to, it only burns for me, like a secret. If I look at it with a friend it illuminates us both, like a mystery that we share. A candle is like art because it melts. It melts and loses itself as if in a dream, without any reason, like all the good things we would prefer to last.... "

Born in Barcelona 7th april 1957 He's working in Lausanne (Switzerland) since 1986 Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne, engraving and drawing (1993) Université de Lausanne, degree in History of Art (1994) , today He created, with the help of Barcelona´s people, a sea made of candles, that neither the rain, nor the wind could make them stop. A lightened sea, emerging from the stones of one of the most important places of Barcelona as we walked by, damped us, and today, just for today, art started to commit its means: uniting creative minds around the world, waking up our expectations, desires, and mind.

Thank you, Barcelona, your sea, lightened our minds today.

About the Project:
A SOCIAL SCULPTURE

Those of us who live in an urban space on a daily basis often have to put up with it more than we enjoy it. There are plenty of reasons for this: work, stress, audio-visual saturation, haste .. The Encenguem la mar ! action wishes to give us the chance to marvel at what is right under our noses: a city-space full of possibilities. This is not, however, an exercise in passive contemplation, but something constructive, which aims at achieving a new, original point of view.

Photobucket

Encenguem la mar! action wishes to create a magical meeting point in which all the potential of the future will appear. One of the vital motors of any society is its culture. To light up this motor in a way which is collective, generous, unusual and civic is, as I see it, a fine reaction to the time of great changes which we are living through.

MICRO.03 : MODERAT = MODESELEKTOR+APPARAT+PFADFINDEREI VISUALS | México
