Alejandro Jodorowsky's ‘Dune’:

An exhibition of a film of a book that never was

takes as its departure point the cult Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s attempted 1976 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel ‘Dune’.

This exhibition includes production drawings made by H.R Giger and Chris Foss alongside commissioned work made in response by three international contemporary artists Steven Claydon, Matthew Day Jackson and Vidya Gastaldon.

Following the release of his mystical Western ‘El Topo’ (1970) and his psychedelic quest movie ‘Holy Mountain’, Jodorowsky embarked on his ‘Dune’ project, gathering around him a group of collaborators that included the French comics artist Moebius, the Swiss artist H.R. Giger (who would later design the 1979 film ‘Alien’), the British sci-fi artist Chris Foss, and the British band Pink Floyd, who would provide the soundtrack. Among Jodorowsky’s proposed cast were Orson Welles, Mick Jagger and Salvador Dali, the last of whom was to play the Emperor of the Universe, who ruled from a golden toilet-cum-throne in the shape of two intertwined dolphins. Unable to secure the money from Hollywood to create the ‘Dune’ of his imagination, Jodorowsky abandoned the film before a single frame was shot. All that survives of this project is Jodorowsky’s extensive notes, and the production drawings of Moebius, Giger and Foss. These reveal a potential future for sci-fi movie making that eschewed the conservative, technology-based approach of American filmmakers in favour of something closer to a metaphysical fever-dream. This was, though, a future that would never take place.

In 1977, George Lucas’ ‘Star Wars’ was released, and the history of sci-fi filmmaking, and even mainstream cinema, would never be the same again.

Una ciudad que , los catalanes llaman "pueblo". Para mì, que soy Mexicana y que conozco la grandeza de esos pequeñitos,pero èpicos pueblos mexicanos llenos de vida, Calaf está lejos de ser un pueblo, lamentablemente es una urbe, solitaria, fantasmal, dotada de tantos servicios, y en el limite del sobrediseño y la sobre-institucionalización del todo . Calaf es un territorio confinado por hermosos trigales, y llanuras que dibujan desde el cielo un peculiar paisaje. En esta ciudad nació el creador de la peseta: los inicios del sistema económico español, y tiene una de las torres de catedral más colosales de la península Ibérica. Como muchas ciudades de Catalunya, Calaf va perdiendo poco a poco esa magnificencia propia, esa identidad rural. Idensitat , un proyecto de arte cuyas propuestan han buscado ya por 10 años construir o impulsar la identidad social, y la pràctica por repensar el territorio y sencillamente enorgullecerse de el, aterriza con un nuevo proyecto donde los Calafines participan directamente y la recuperacion de la identidad rural, los huertos, jardines, y espacios para repensar el territorio donde viven, son el fin. Calaf , con una historia importantìsima para Catalunya, y el paìs entero, apoya un proyecto que intentarà mostrar a sus habitantes y el mundo, lo que son : su identidad peculiar, local y ùnica.

Objetivos
Crear un laboratorio de participación y reflexión sobre el espacio público y el hábitat de Calaf. Hacer de esta intervención innovadora una experiencia que permita convertir los solares abandonados y degradados en espacios vivos, regenerados y bellos, capaces de aportar valor y autoestima, integración y promoción de la vida comunitaria.

Jardines Temporales_ El taller
Este taller intensivo tiene previsto desarrollar las siguientes actividades: > Repensar e intervenir el territorio como espacio de construcción de autoestima.

> Crear una cartografía de los solares abandonados de Calaf.
> Investigar ideas o conceptos relacionados con los espacios abandonados en el casco urbano de Calaf.
> Proponer intervenciones temporales en los espacios abandonados.
> Fomentar y crear proyectos participados por los vecinos.
> Desarrollar un proyecto cultural específico para las necesidades de los habitantes de Calaf.
> Crear una experiencia de observación del territorio.
> Explorar las estéticas contemporáneas.
> Desarrollar nuevas habilidades y un estilo personal.
> Reflexionar sobre el mundo contemporáneo y su traducción estética.

Su trabajo cuenta con varias exposiciones así como colaboraciones con diferentes entidades en Europa.

is an art project developed with the will of providing mechanisms for the articulation of creative projects in the field of public space and related to the territory. The goal is to stimulate creative practices which experiment with new ways of social engagement and participation, connected to already existing practices and dynamics in the territory. The critical intervention, the processes of social interaction and the hybrids among different disciplines are the goals developed since the beginning of this programme...........................................................................................

At the present moment these constitute elements that have been investigated in a great number of artistic proposals aiming to establish a relationship with specific territories, articulate a network with people and collectives, and also actively participate in the transformation of some elements of social reality. [ From this perspective, IDENSITAT intends to generate a frame for work, diffusion and debate that it is structured firstly by an open call for new projects and then by those projects which have already been executed; as well as an amalgam of educational activities and actions that contribute as a whole to strengthen the idea of vindication of social space through creative practice. ]

Since 1999 there are some projects and activities going on in the town of Calaf, and little by little a relationship has been set up with other towns with the aim of allowing the development of projects that can be adapted to their variables and to many others promoted by the specificity of the place itself. IDENSITAT 07 develops in the towns of Calaf and Manresa, like in the previous edition. Both being towns of the Barcelona province, they have triggered this programme, having a close cooperation with the ‘Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya' and the ‘Diputació de Barcelona' . In this new edition the territorial scope is expanded thanks to the development of a project in the city of Mataró through the involvement of ‘Can Xalant, Centre de Creació i Pensament Contemporani.'


In the fourth edition of the programme, IDENSITAT 07 proposes the theme HOME / AWAY, having the intention of triggering all its activities in three specific contexts, which have characteristically had in common their processes of urban transformation and expansion. Under the motto HOME / AWAY, different fields linked to the development of projects are taken into account, either highlighting strategies based on the work processes, or activating proposals that present structures of specific intervention in public space. Under the light of this wide perspective the production of different projects is proposed, which will be distributed in the three towns or their territorial context: Calaf, Manresa and Mataró.



This specific chapter is defined in the public call as PROJECT PRODUCTION.


In the current edition a space for showing presentations that document projects already done in other times and contexts has been included.



In the section DOCUMENTARY PROJECTS the aim is to call for those theoretical works and specific experiences that have been developed in other places.



This includes proposals developed under the light of different setups, either focusing on the processes, or in a more ephemeral way, using the available facilities or the media; or also through strategies that combine the specific action with activities of a longer duration. In this section it is possible to participate with a theoretical development.



{ With the aim of establishing a relationship with the specific context where action takes place, the selected projects will be made public according to different formulae of presentation, either in the participation of debates or in conferences, according to the characteristics of the proposal.

Born in Barcelona 7th april 1957 He's working in Lausanne (Switzerland) since 1986 Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne, engraving and drawing (1993) Université de Lausanne, degree in History of Art (1994) , today He created, with the help of Barcelona´s people, a sea made of candles, that neither the rain, nor the wind could make them stop. A lightened sea, emerging from the stones of one of the most important places of Barcelona as we walked by, damped us, and today, just for today, art started to commit its means: uniting creative minds around the world, waking up our expectations, desires, and mind.

A SOCIAL SCULPTURE

Those of us who live in an urban space on a daily basis often have to put up with it more than we enjoy it. There are plenty of reasons for this: work, stress, audio-visual saturation, haste .. The Encenguem la mar ! action wishes to give us the chance to marvel at what is right under our noses: a city-space full of possibilities. This is not, however, an exercise in passive contemplation, but something constructive, which aims at achieving a new, original point of view.



Encenguem la mar! action wishes to create a magical meeting point in which all the potential of the future will appear. One of the vital motors of any society is its culture. To light up this motor in a way which is collective, generous, unusual and civic is, as I see it, a fine reaction to the time of great changes which we are living through.

Gabriela Maciel A brazilian contemporary artist, born in July 29 th 1977 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.Gabriela has been exhibiting since 2000. Using diverse medias such as Painting, sculpture, installation video and photography. The artist passed through different fases in her production, that started in the late 90s. Gabriela’s artistic concepts of creation moved from expressions of a conturbate world of social disparities and a sense of displacment, to historical clashes of culture and hibridisms. Her works are filled with the idea of physical transformation by deconstruction and reconstruction to the fluid influence of bodily movements, converted into palpable matter. Gabriela breaks the boundaries of artistic expressions in many senses. Converging high-tech and low-tech, as well as collaborating with artists from several fields worldwide.

A large exhibition for the first time of this year "A Starting Point: Intrude Art & Life 366" is held at Zendai MoMA (Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art). And the show has featured works of Gabriela Maciel, an artist as well as a passionate and emotional performer who creates huge installation works with a Brazilian background.

Can you tell me about your artistic process and the conceptual framework of your practice, especially the piece you produced in Shanghai?

For some site specific installations, as for the Cortex Wall of Brightness, for Intrude / Zendai MoMA, I start by making drawings of the work.Inspirational drawings and technical studies. When I start working with the material, the making process on site develops in different ways from the ones predicted in the drawings.It's a mixture of time based process, in an almost performative act on site for the passers by in the surroundings of the space in which I'm producing. The cultural influences of the country encounter my line of concept and aesthetic creation; the materials available to buy, the textures and shapes of the architecture, the time given for production, weather and sizes of the space, the way people circulate and interact with the space that I am creating the installation for. All these aspects influence the creation of my site specific installations.

In previous site specific installations, from 2003 until 2007, I've also produced on site, during performances. Those performances, in that time, were much more related to intense bodily movements, influenced by live digital sound pre recorded, mixed and played live on site. I've also worked with digital video projection, overlaying the same installation, in a different time, using the projection as the light of the performance installation, in an overlapping displacement of time and process, in the same time of the audiences immersion in the process.
Until today it is not an easy one to comprehend practice due to a profound mixture of medias in the creative process and presentation of one piece. I deal with either extremely contemporary material, produced in an extremely manual way, or extremely new techniques to transform ancient sources.The ancient and futuristic clash, time and processes are dilated, hyper speeded and sometimes overlayed.

Rene Almanza was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon in 1979. Graduated from the UANL Visual Arts Faculty, he started his job in visual arts during his adolescence, first as comic drawer, underground fanzines and Local Newspapers in Monterrey. Lately, he worked in press project, posters mainly. In the year 2000 became part of Reforma Group ( Newspapers: El Norte ( MTY), Reforma, Mexico City, Mural Guadalajara and Palabra, Saltillo) in the illustration department in the Editorial Area, illustrating diverse periodic articles. He was in charge of the Cultural Sections Illustrations in El Norte Newspaper for 2 years , during this time, his job obtained six awards in Editorial Illustration by the SND, Society for the Newspaper Design, New York, which is given each year internationally to the best work in the areas of design, photography and editorial illustration. After three years with Reforma group , he joined the Editorial Project “Shinseken” in Tokyo, Japan, that collected stories about traditions of all the world, and then compiled in a collection of illustrated books published in 5 different languages. At the end of the project, he went back to Mexico.

He is founder member of Arte Cocodrilo Gallery, and the Graphics Workshop Pata de Perro, independent spaces dedicated to promote emerged visual art. He actually works, with Colegio de México linguistics, in other project with the Editorial Sirpus ( Barcelona, Spain): a series illustrated bilingual books of stories from the Oaxaca- Zapoteca´s towns. Rene Almanza´s art work is part of many private collections in México, EU, Argentina, Chile, Canada, Francia, España, Suiza, Alemania, Italia, Holanda, Marruecos, Australia, Japón, Bangladesh, China and Vietnam.

He´s Top Member of The Mexican Talent Stock: The Pigmy Deer Network.
He represents mexican talent among all plastic artists : a unique vision in the territory called Arts, with every line presented on canvas or paper.

" No es una banda que se distinga por su constancia, cada vez que el ensamble ocurre la magia esta presente " MySpace.

Be my Bronx, fue creado originalmente por Adrián Guardia a finales del 2000, pero en el 2001, cuando se dió cuenta que ocasionalmente habría de tener presentaciones en vivo, invitó a su amigo Luis Ezequiel "Fara" y junto con él, Be My Bronx fue evolucionando de un proyecto de estudio a una banda en vivo con firmes raíces en el blues y el rock, aunque también se pasean con gusto por el country, el jazz y la música contemporánea.

La alineación de Be My Bronx ha tenido numerosos cambios y casi todos los artistas de Happy Fi han desfilado como miembros ocasionales de Be My Bronx, sin embargo, la alineación empezó a cuajar cuando (Kiko Blake) ocupó el asiento del baterista a mediados de el 2002. En el 2008 la banda retoma vuelos cuando después de años de apariciones intermitentes y un fallido intento por grabar un disco en el 2007, deciden volver a la carga a pesar de sus múltiples ocupaciones y compromisos con otras bandas, trabajos y/o familias.

Solo el puesto del bajista sufrió modificaciones pues José Gabriel Cárdenas regresó a su natal Culiacán, pero fue reemplazado por otro Sinaloense: Mario López. Actualmente, la banda también cuenta con la participación de Jorge Cháirez en el slide.

Cuando sus obligaciones impiden que la banda al completo se reuna, Adrián y Luis Ezequiel han continuado una tradición de años de juntarse a fumar, beber y jammear al menos cada fin de semana, manteniendo vivo el espíritu de Be My Bronx que, aunque es justo decir que no es una banda que se distinga por su constancia, cada vez que el ensamble ocurre la magia esta presente.

Hay 27 leones en otras partes del mundo creando redes. Beijing, Zurich, Milan, La Haya, Paris, Manchester, Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Sur Africa, Nueva York, Los Angeles, Austin, D.F., Playa Del Carmen, Zacatecas, Sabinas Hidalgo, Mamulique, Santa Catarina, Monterrey y San Pedro. En todas estas ciudades solo hay uno o dos leones, en San Pedro hay alrededor de 100 leones.

Gabi Fuentes. Poesía Melancólica VS. Jeopardy Smart. Creadora de singulares trazos que se yuxtaponen entre lo dulce y lo ácido de una historia que nos habla de una mujer, que posiblemente es ella, aplicando un efecto metamorfosis-pictórico. Metamorfosis: Un lenguaje peculiar que hoy en día es muy utilizado, no solo en la plástica, pero que pocas veces, tiene los aciertos que vemos en la ilustraciones del Gabi Gabi . Delicada como las alas de una mariposa, y filoso ante el canon que nos presenta la disciplina de la gráfica, en su mayor parte se compone, la colección,de rostros femeninos.

No importa tanto si Gaby es Licenciada en Arte de la Universidad de Monterrey o asidua lectora de Carrol, Huxley y Poe, la anástrofe pictórica a la que se acude en la obra de Fuentes, la califica como una de las máximas exponentes de Gráfica Narrativa Contemporánea. Atrapó la esencia más infantil y naive del proceso constructivo de sus trazos, y traduce esa niñez en maduras obras de arte.

El eco de las piezas resuenan en cada trazo zizagueado y “erróneamente colocado”. En la fina línea que ella misma desdibuja entre lo que entendemos como gráfica e ilustración . La construcción de un mundo de líneas que nunca pensamos ver, al final detallando un femíneo territorio a-la-gaby, atrapó desde un principio nuestros sentidos.

Peculiar, y de asombroso lenguaje. Una voz artística innovadora. Gaby Fuentes, miembro de The Pigmy Deer Network, Un proyecto que forma parte del Stock de Talento Mexicano.

Fue Hace aproximadamente 3 años. Siempre interesada por conocer talento emergente, y en si, gente creativa, una entonces nueva amiga, ( ahora gran amiga y colega) Elena Montalvo, Miss Mars Clothing prometió presentarme al mejor diseñador gráfico de MTY, y ella se atrevió a decir, "uno de los mejores que conocerás en el país” .

Hoy, después de esos tres años, aquel es uno de los diseñadores a los que más admiro ( Rik Dávila) uno de los integrantes de Face , y además, uno de los creadores del proyecto multidisciplinario : Page : the magazine. Una revista gratuita, de formato impecable, que más que una revista, es un dossier de manifestación cultural actual. Un espacio expositivo de proyectos en al ámbito de las artes, el diseño, la arquitectura, la fotografía etc.. , curados por FACE.

Page, más que un proyecto editorial, se ha convertido en plataforma para muchos artistas, productores, diseñadores, fotógrafos ..muchos de ellos, ahora forman parte de The Pigmy Deer Network ,es asi como se convierte Page en una plataforma también para nuestro proyecto de Stock de Talento Mexicano. El trabajo en equipo & la constancia por cada dia exponer el talento inigualable, se recompensan, cuando el Director de Editorial & Arte de una revista de la talla de PAGE hace una propuesta para publicar y presentar el colectivo a nivel nacional. Es así como nace una mancuerna interesante entre
